In order to complete these kinds of transactions legally, it is very important that you are well organized and comply with all the VicRoads recommendations.
Buying or transferring an used vehicle.
If you are going to sell/buy or transfer an used vehicle, there are some important steps you cannot miss. It is mandatory that all parts bring valid ID’s (If possible with photo) to comply with the correct identification of both parts, and to complete the vehicle`s transfer form properly.
Step 1.
Before you buy a vehicle, the first step is to check the Vehicle’s registration status. This data is available at the official VicRoads website, or by calling the number 1300 007 777. Once you have checked the current legal situation of the vehicle you can proceed to the next phase.
2 - Download the PDF Vehicle transfer form from the official VicRoads website. In some scenarios it will be necessary to present a roadworthy certificate to the VicRoads authority. Please check the VicRoads website to check for any exemptions.
It will be mandatory to be in possession of the VicRoads customer number. (This number can be easily found in your driver's license or in the latest registration renewal notice).
Step 3.
Buy the vehicle and complete the transfer form in the correct way. When filling this document, take your time, to avoid any mistakes. Ensure all the data is correct and don't miss any detail. The document must be signed by both parts. Be aware that this document will have to be uploaded into the system and it must be legible.
It is highly recommended that along with the transfer form, both parties fill up a receipt of purchase. After completing all the paperwork, keep a copy of all the documents in order to have a proof of the transaction.
Step 4.
Inform the VicRoads department within the next 14 days after the transaction has been done.
It is mandatory that the seller of the vehicle submits the “Notice of disposal” using the VicRoads account, and informs the VicRoads of the transaction. Once this process has been done, the vehicle will be transferred to the new owner within a day.
On the other hand, the buyer must complete the online procedure using the VicRoads personal account and comply with the next steps and the payment of the fee to finally complete the process.
Please bear in mind that all documents will be requested at this stage, and you will be asked to upload a picture or scan a PDF of the transaction documents.
If this process is not completed for both parts within the time period of 14 days, the transaction will be suspended.
Buying a vehicle from a car dealer.
If you are buying a vehicle from a dealer, you won't have to do much, as it is the dealer's responsibility to keep you informed and accomplish all the paperwork to transfer the vehicle into your name. The seller of the vehicle will have to pay the transfer fees to the dealer and sign all the applicable documents.
It is highly recommended to keep a copy or photo of the signed documents
