Registration Cancel in Victoria
All drivers may cancel their registration at all times and request a refund for the period they won't be able use their vehicle or vessel.
These circumstances are:
- If the vehicle or vessel has been stolen - The driver can cancel the vehicle`s registration and request the refund starting on the day of the theft.
- If the driver is affected by any disease or disability and is no able to drive safely - If you have suffered this, you may cancel the registration of your vehicle.
- If there were an accident and the vehicle has been destroyed - You can request the cancelation of the registration and apply for the reimbursement of the money from the day of the accident.
- When selling your vehicle or vessel.
- Other special circumstances.
There are different ways you can proceed in order to request a cancelation of your registration.
You can do it online by visiting your VicRoads account and choosing the option “Cancel my registration”. In this case, you may request the refund of the money at the same time. Also, by using this method, you will have to provide real evidence of the destruction of the vehicle`s number plates.
If you prefer you may also visit one the the VicRoads customer service centers and bring your vehicle`s number plates along with your ID (or any equivalent to prove your identity). Bear in mind that due to the COVID situation this service may vary, and it is highly recommended to use the online service until further notice.
In some scenarios, the VicRoads allows the driver to keep the number plates or to transfer a number plate from a vehicle to another one. In case you prefer to keep your number plate, it will be necessary to inform the VicRoads department and to be aware that a fee will be conducted in order to complete the transaction. How to request a Refund
After a cancellation has been conducted, you can apply for a reimbursement of the unused period of your registration to the VicRoads department. Before proceeding with this it is very important that you keep your home address updated in the system at all times. The money reimbursed will arrive at your home address in a cheque in approximately 4 weeks.
It is allowed to request a reimbursement after the cancellation has been conducted, but is highly recommended to request the refund at the same time you request the cancellation to avoid misunderstandings and to save time.
There are 3 different ways you may proceed:
- Online - Using your VicRoads account.
- In person - Visiting one of the VicRoads customer service centers.
- By mail - Sending a refund form to “VicRoads - GPO Box 1644, Melbourne - VIC 3001”.
All refunds will be sended in a cheque to your home address provided in the system in a 4 weeks time period. Taxes and other administration fees will be deducted from the total amount to reimburse.
