In the case you need to sell or transfer your vehicle it is very important that you are well organized and you comply with the VicRoads recommendations in order to legally complete the process.
Selling or transferring a used vehicle.
If you are selling or transferring your used vehicle, there are some important steps you should not miss. It is very important that all parts grant valid ID’s during the process (Identification Cards, passports o Drivers license.). This is to comply with the correct identification of both parts, and to complete the vehicle`s transfer in a safe way.
Step 1.
The first step before you sell your vehicle is to assure that the current vehicle is registered under your name. You can access this data by using the VicRoads available at the official VicRoads website. A vehicle´s registration certificate (or renewal) can be used as a proof of ownership as well.
Step 2.
Download the Vehicle transfer form from the official VicRoads website.
In some cases a roadworthy certificate will be demanded by the VicRoads authority. Please check the VicRoads website to check the exemptions.
It will be necessary that you possess your VicRoads customer number. This number can be founded in your driver's license or in your latest registration renewal notice.
At this step, it is necessary that you observe if you want to keep your number plates or no. In case you want to keep them you will have to inform the VIcRoads department and cancel your registration. Bear in mind that this scenario can lead to a fee payment in order to keep the number plates.
Step 3.
Sell your vehicle and complete the transfer form correctly. Take your time when filling up this document to avoid mistakes. This step is very important, as this document will have to be uploaded to the system and it must be legible.
Ensure all the data is correct and it's fully completed, don't miss any detail. The document must be signed by both parts.
It is highly recommended to fill up a receipt of purchase along with the transfer form. After completing all the paperwork, keep a copy or take a photo of all the documents in order to have a proof of the transaction.
Step 4.
Inform the VicRoads within the next 14 days after the transaction has been done.
The seller of the vehicle will submit the “Notice of disposal” using his/her VicRoads account, and will inform the VicRoads of the transaction. Once this process has been done, the vehicle will be transferred to the new owner from one day to another. Then the buyer will have to complete the online procedure using the VicRoads personal account and complete the payment of the fee to finally conclude the process. If the process is not completed in the time frame of 14 days, all the transaction will be suspended.
Please bear in mind that at this stage all documents will be requested, and you will be asked to upload a picture or scan a PDF of the transaction documents.
Selling your vehicle to a dealer.
In this scenario is the dealers own responsibility to go through all the paperwork on your behalf. A fee payment will be conducted and it is strongly recommended to keep a copy (or photo) of all the signed documents.
