The probationary Driver's license will be issued for all of those who are starting to drive in the area of Victoria, and for those who have lost their license due to different causes.

After you check if you comply with all the minimum requirements for the license, the next step will be to book an appointment and study for the relevant tests.

Hazard perception test

  • This test will be taken for all drivers who want to get a probationary license. All drivers must be minimum 17 and 11 years old at the time to take the test.
  • If this test is not successfully passed on the first attempt, the driver will have the chance to try one more time in the same appointment.
  • The official VicRoads website gives every driver the chance to practise this test online to help you be prepared.
  • The test results will be given on the same day, and it will be valid for 12 months.

Driving test

  • Before attempting the Driving test it will be necessary to pass the Hazard perception test.
  • Please note that the VicRoads does not provide any vehicle for this test and is the driver's own responsibility to bring their own vehicle.
  • Among all the necessary documentation, it is necessary that the driver provides the learners license, the learners log book (if necessary), and the applicable hazard perception test approved.
  • If the test is successfully passed, the probationary license will be issued and received on the same day.

Special medical condition

  • In the case the driver suffers any special medical condition, illness or disability, it will be necessary to pass a medical exam and bring a medical report before taking the tests.

The duration of this license will depend on the driver’s age. Observing this, the Probationary license will have different periods of expiration.

  • If the driver is under 21 years old, the license will be issued for 4 years (the first 12 months at the P1 level and then 3 years at the P2).
  • If the driver is 21 or older, the licenses will be issued for 3 years at a P2 level.
