Your LS
All new drivers must apply for the learners license to the Vic Roads department. To proceed with this, you must be 16 years old or older and you must pass the driving exam.
There are two different exams you will be tested on:
- A Knowledge test
- An eyesight test
1 - First of all, you must be ready and study for the knowledge driving test. This exam contains 32 questions and the pass score is 78%, so you will have to answer at least 25 questions right to pass.
The exam is based on the “Road to Solo Driving handbook” which you may download from the official VicRoads website. There are different languages available for you to facilitate comprehension.
2 - Once you feel ready to take the official exam, you will have to schedule an appointment and visit the VicRoads customer service department to access the test.
There are different ways you can make your appointment:
- Online - enter the official VicRoads website and make your appointment fast and easy.
- By phone - by calling 13 11 71.
- Visiting the VicRoads customer service center - Please bear in mind that due to COVID19 this service may not be available.
Please take into consideration that in case you are late to your appointment, (more than 5 minutes late), you will be asked to schedule a new appointment and a new fee will have to be paid. Under special circumstances, you will be allowed to change your appointment (at least with 24 hrs notice period), please visit the VicRoads portal for more information.
There will be a fee payment required which you may pay with credit card VISA or MASTERCARD, or even with Cheque or cash at some centers. Please ask for more information before you proceed with the payment.
3 - Once your appointment is scheduled, you will have to proceed to download the “licence or learner permit application form” from the VicRoads official website. Fill the document using capital and legible letters. It is very important that you DO NOT SIGN the document and fill it up correctly, as you will be asked to sign the form in the presence of one of the VicRoads officials.
4 - You will be able to get your learner's permit card once you have passed the test and all the process is finished. You will have to take the photo and pay for your new license. The actual learners card will arrive at your home address in the next 15 days, until then, you will be allowed to drive using the Ls receipt that you will receive on the same day (This will be valid for 3 months).
COVID INFO: Please note that all new appointments are suspended at some of the VicRoads Centers due to the COVID19 situation. Applicants whose exams have been cancelled from April up to October will have the priority over new appointments. Please contact the VicRoads customer service before scheduling your appointment.
